Friends of Columbus Park of Roses:

The Volunteers

Columbus Park of Roses Volunteers is a group that includes experienced rosarians
and novice gardeners, retired seniors and high school students, and men and women
from many backgrounds who enjoy working in a beautiful environment and learning
from each other.

Some people join so they can take their new skills back to their own garden. Others join because they don't have a garden at home. And many join because they want to help support this nationally recognized garden which is also their neighborhood park.

Volunteers can elect to work in the gardens, become tour guides, feed the birds, help with special events, or get involved in all of these activities.

Gardening Volunteers are trained in rose pruning techniques, learning how and where to cut depending on time of year and other factors. They work with roses that need different care, such as hybrid teas, climbers and shrubs and learn to distinguish once blooming from repeat blooming varieties. Gardeners are asked to provide their own hand pruners and sturdy gloves. Currently, three work groups meet weekly from Mid-March through mid-September on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8:30 to 11:30 and Thursday evening, from 6:00 to dusk. Volunteers can work in any or all of these groups on a regular basis or as their schedules permit.

Tour guides are trained in the history and development of Columbus Park of Roses, along with information about the types of roses grown here. They do not need to memorize all 393 names on the rose list! Tours are most frequently scheduled in June and September.

Bird feeding is a winter activity. Special events (lectures, potlucks, social get togethers)
happen throughout the year.
